Himes Associates, Ltd in Attendance as Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell Speaks at Mid-Atlantic Luncheon

On May 31st, the CoreNet Mid-Atlantic Chapter held its first ever Governor's Luncheon Event featuring The Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Governor Bob McDonnell. The Governor discussed a large array of hot topics ranging from technology expansion to relieving area traffic congestion.

The Governor focused specifically on Virginia's Economic Development plan and the State's plans for creating more jobs and opportunities. With the increased need for a well-qualified and educated workforce, improving affordability and accessibility in Virginia's higher education system was definitely a topic of interest for many in attendance. Governor McDonnell stressed the intrinsic link between education and employment and how the State planned to promote degrees in business, information technology and other burgeoning industries.

After his discussion, the Governor opened the floor to questions. Incentivizing tele-working, the possibilities of a new by-pass and marketing to international corporations were just a few of the topics on audience member's minds. The luncheon concluded with a discussion of how federal budget cuts impact Virginia and how the State plans to ensure that programs and initiatives remain funded without increasing taxes.

At 16:53 local time, a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, shocked the island nation of Haiti. By January 24th, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake with the Haitian Government reporting that an estimated 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless.

On January 27th, Paul Himes took off for the first of two Haitian relief missions. With his beloved Malibu N888PK packed tight with food, water and supplies, Paul, through the relief organization www.bahamashabitat.org, took to the air for his first of many trips to the devastated Haitian nation.
