Battelle

Project Scope

Himes Associates, Ltd. worked closely with Battelle Memorial Institute on the development and construction of the first phase of their East Coast Regional Headquarters development located on 89 acres at HEAT Center in Aberdeen, Maryland.

The first phase of the project was the master planning and development of a 29-acre parcel into several offices, conference rooms and laboratory space to support their research clients. The first building is an 80,000 square foot structure that provides 40,000 square feet of office, 15,000 square feet of chemical and biological laboratories, 15,000 square feet for a conferencing facility and the balance being common areas. The laboratories are unique since they have a full interstitial floor above the laboratory block to provide easy access for maintenance and future modifications as their research contracts change.

Himes Associates role was to provide local expertise, oversight and management of the project while the client traveled back and forth from Battelle’s headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. Himes competitively bid the Architect, Construction Manager and other key consultants and vendors to assemble the project team to meet Battelle’s quality, budget and time constraints.
